SAINIK SCHOOL PUNGLWA (NAGALAND)

BRIEF HISTORY: Sainik school Punglwa, the twenty first Sainik School of the country was inaugurated on 12 May 2007 at Punglwa (Nagaland) by Shri A K Antony, Defence Minister, Government of India. His Excellency Shri K Sankaranarayanan, Governor of Nagaland, Shri Neiphiu Rio, Chief minister of Nagaland, Shri M M Pallam Raju , Raksha Rajya MantrI, the entire State Government Ministers and other dignitaries of Nagaland and Ministry of Defence were also present during the inaugural ceremony.

It is the third Sainik School in the north eastern region. The other two are Sainik School Goalpara(Assam) rose in the year 1964 and Sainik School imphal (Manipur) established in the year 1971. It was on the initiative of the Nagaland chapter of the old boys association of sainik schools under the present Chief Minister of Nagaland, Shri Neiphiu Rio , who himself is alumnus of Sainik School Purulia that the idea of establishment of Sainik School was mooted. A brief timeline of establishment of the school is as under:

Administration: Maj Gen Deepak Saxena, Chief of Staff, HQ 3 corps is the chairman of Local Board of Administration.

Staff and Cadets: The present strength of officers & staff is 102 (including 02 PTIs) and cadets is 592 ( (including 08 day scholars).

Academic: Admission to class VI & IX is granted strictly on the basis of an All India Sainik Schools Entrance Examination which is conducted simultaneously at various centres throughout India in the month of January. The designated centres in Nagaland and Arunanchal Pardesh are Dimapur, Kohima, Pungalwa(School Campus), Itanagar and Tawang.

Facilities:

Hostels or Dormitories, Medical Facilities, Sports/Games and NCC.

There are six houses (Tizu, Zapfu, Saramati, Melak, Doyang and Patkai) and four Holding Houses (Dhansin, Dzukou, Shiloi and Pauna).

The first batch of the school to pass out Class XII was in 2013.

Cadet Manna Deb, an alumnus of the school[batch of 2013] successfully made the merit for TES [Navy]. He is the first cadet to have qualified from the school.
