Hon’ble Dr. Justice S.Vimala

Justice S.Vimala was born on 11.01.1957. Her educational qualifications are B.Sc. (Chemistry), B.L. (Madras Law College), M.L., Crime & Torts, (Pondicherry University) and Ph.D., (in law) (Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University). She enrolled as an advocate on 16.03.1983 and practised at Chidambaram and Cuddalore. She became the first Judge of the Mahila Court, Chennai, in the year 2002. Aesthetically inclined, she got an award from Civic Exnora, Trichy, for keeping the District Court Complex clean and green (Best State Government Office 2005).

She is the first ever woman to become the Director of a State Judicial Academy in India in the year 2006. Introduced computer aided teaching in the Academy. During her tenure, she embarked on a mission to find out the ground realities and the problems faced by the inmates of Government Vigilance Home, where the accused and the victims are put together. She submitted the findings to the High Court. Based on her report, the Hon’ble the then Chief Justice directed the Registry to file a Public Interest Litigation that resulted in framing of exhaustive guidelines to the learned Judicial Magistrates dealing with the cases under ITP Act. This is hailed as a seminal contribution to the sensitization of an issue that would reform, rehabilitate and reintegrate a considerable portion of women folk, which hitherto unnoticed by the policy makers, social welfare organizations and also by the Judiciary itself.

She written a book, “Whether winning a case means Success in life ?” which was published by Tamil Nadu State Commission for Women. In the year 2010, she was invited by the UPSC to assist the interview board to screen the prospective Deputy Government Counsel of Indian Legal Service. After she became the Registrar General, High Court, Madras, on 16.02.2010, she had performed with typical vigour, till her elevation to the Bench of the Madras High Court, under the directions of the Hon’ble The Chief Justice and ensured the grand success of the Inaugural of 150th Year Celebrations of the High Court, Madras.

Thus, her career as a District Judge spanning over about 12 years stands enriched with experience on both Judicial and Administrative side of the Judiciary, on equal measures. Her experience as lawyer for 16 years has enriched her knowledge and ability to deal with any situation.

She was appointed as Additional Judge of the High Court on 20.12.2011 and made as permanent Judge on 21.10.2013.
