Govt of India is proposing a common counselling for admission into Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs) for avoiding vacant seats in IITs. Very soon Human Development Ministry may come out with an order for 16 IITs and 30 NITs to conduct counselling jointly for 2014 admission. In year 2013 as many as 600 seats were vacant in these institutions because lack of coordination among these institutions. IITs previously discarded the proposal citing their counselling precedes NITs counselling and the preference of candidates to join IITs over NITs. However, Govt may soon come with an order in this regard.
