ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

Department of Mathematics

       The National Board of Higher Mathematics conducts an entrance exam for the Post Graduate and PhD courses. The candidate attending the exam can join the Institution. The entrance exam consists of screening Test .The candidates who have passed the screening test are eligible for Interview. The eligibility of the candidate is that he/he must have passed Mater of degree in Mathematics with minimum percentage. The candidates who have passed JRF or GATE can directly attend the interview process.

Department of Theoretical Computer Science

     The Joint Entrance Screening Test is been conducted for the PhD and Integrated PhD courses. The exam is conducted once in a year. The mathematical aspects of Computer Science are eligible for the exam. The candidates who have completed Master degree in Computer Science or Computer Applications are eligible for the exam. The exam paper consists of two sections and the time duration for the paper is three hours. The Section A is of objective type and Section B is of short type answer section. Depending on the cutoff marks the candidates are called for interview process. GATE Score is used a an advantage .Based on this score the candidates are not selected

Department of Theoretical Physics

       The Joint Entrance Screening Test is been conducted for Master Degree, PhD and Integrated PhD courses. The candidates who have attended the JRF and GATE exam and has been qualified can directly attend the interview process. Depending on the cutoff marks of the JEST ,the candidates are been selected for the interview process. The Exam paper consists of two Sections with three hours time duration. The objective type and short answer type questions must be answered. The candidates who have completed Bachelor degree or Master’s degree are eligible for the Master degree and PhD respectively

M Sc (Applied Mathematics)

        The Entrance examination is conducted for the Applied Mathematics. The candidate must have passed in 10th and 12th exams and degree from a recognized University with a percentage of 60% and above. The Entrance exam consists of three hours time duration and with 100 multiple choice questions and the pattern consists of two parts. There will be penalty for each wrong answer.

Calculus and Analysis:

Limit, continuity, uniform continuity and differentiability; Bolzano Weierstrass theorem; mean value theorems; tangents and normal; maxima and minima; theorems of integral calculus; sequences and series of functions; uniform convergence; power series; Riemann sums; Riemann integration; definite and improper integrals; partial derivatives and Leibnitz theorem; total derivatives; Fourier series; functions of several variables; multiple integrals; line; surface and volume integrals; theorems of Green; Stokes and Gauss; curl; divergence and gradient of vectors.

Algebra: 

Basic theory of matrices and determinants; groups and their elementary properties; subgroups, normal subgroups, cyclic groups, permutation groups; Lagrange’s theorem; quotient groups; homomorphism of groups; isomorphism and correspondence theorems; rings; integral domains and fields; ring homomorphism and ideals; vector space, vector subspace, linear independence of vectors, basis and dimension of a vector space.

Differential equations:

General and particular solutions of ordinary differential equations (ODEs); formation of ODE; order, degree and classification of ODEs; integrating factor and linear equations; first order and higher degree linear differential equations with constant coefficients; variation of parameter; equation reducible to linear form; linear and quasi-linear first order partial differential equations (PDEs); Lagrange and Charpits methods for first order PDE; general solutions of higher order PDEs with constant coefficients.

Numerical Analysis:

 Computer arithmetic; machine computation; bisection, secant; Newton-Raphson and fixed point iteration methods for algebraic and transcendental equations; systems of linear equations: Gauss elimination, LU decomposition, Gauss Jacobi and Gauss Siedal methods, condition number; Finite difference operators; Newton and Lagrange interpolation; least square approximation; numerical differentiation; Trapezoidal and Simpsons integration methods.

Probability and Statistics:

Mean, median, mode and standard deviation; conditional probability; independent events; total probability and Baye’s theorem; random variables; expectation, moments generating functions; density and distribution functions, conditional expectation.

Linear Programming:

 Linear programming problem and its formulation; graphical method, simplex method, artificial starting solution, sensitivity analysis, duality and post-optimality analysis.

M.Sc in BioTechnology:

PGDCA

    The entrance exam is conducted for PGDCA. The Candidates are elected based on the aggregate marks of the graduation and entrance exam. The eligibility for the test is that candidate must have a Bachelor degree from a recognized University/Institution with a minimum of 60% marks.

M Sc(Bioinformatics)

     The entrance exam conducted for the Bioinformatics. The candidates are selected based on the marks obtained in the entrance exam. Combined Entrance Test

       The Combined Entrance Exam is conducted for all the candidates who are willing to pursue degree in Punjab Technical University. The Eligibility of the candidate is to pass in 10 +2 with the main stream subjects as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Computer Science. Diploma course candidates are also eligible for the entrance test. The entrance test is conducted for B.Tech, B.Pharm, B.Arch candidates.

        The paper consists of three sections. The first section is of objective type questions. The later part consists of short answer descriptive type questions and questions from core subjects. The proficiency in Punjabi language is been tested .The question paper is been set in English language.

NATIONAL BOARD OF HIGHER MATHEMATICS

       National Board of Higher Mathematics was setup by Government of India under the development of Department of Atomic Energy. The main mission is to develop and research in various areas of Mathematics. Many researches in Mathematics were done by great scholars in India, so development in Mathematics is must. The board was established in the year 1983.It has six sub-committees. They are Research Programme Committee, Mathematics Olympiad Programme Committee, The University Programme Committee, Nurture Programme Committee, Examination Committee and Library Grants Committee. The decisions about the board are done by Committees. The NBHM offers Scholarships for Researches in Mathematics, Postdoctoral Fellowships and PhD in Mathematics.

     The Mathematics Olympiad is a training programme by National Board of Higher Mathematics with the association of Homi Baba Center for Science Education. The procedure is as; the selected students will attend the Regional Mathematical Olympiad which consists of three hour written test of seven questions. The selected students from the RMO are qualified for Indian National Mathematical Olympiad. The Indian National Mathematical Olympiad consists of four hour written test. The top scorers are given certificate for the participation. The awardees are provided training classes for the International Mathematical Olympiad. From the training provided the Leader and Deputy Leader are selected to represent the nation in the International Mathematical Olympiad. Prizes are offered to the winners in the International mathematical Olympiad.

MATHEMATICS TRAINING AND TALENT SEARCH:

      The Mathematics Training and Talent Search is a training programme conducted by the National Board of Higher Mathematics. The main objective of the programme is to provide a platform for the talented candidates who are interested in this field.        The National Board of Higher Mathematics provides various scholarships for Undergraduate students from selected Institutions. The scholarships are given by Written Test and Interview. The selected candidates are given a scholarship amount every month.

MASTERS SCHOLARSHIPS:

        The Masters Scholarship provided to outstanding students from various institutions. The selection is based on the written test and interview. A sum of 6000/- is given to the selected participant every month. This is mainly conducted for Master’s degree candidates. The written test consists of 3 sections with 30 marks and150 minutes time duration. The shortlisted candidates in the written test are eligible for Interview process.

PhD SCHOLARSHIPS:

       The scholarship is mainly for PhD students who are possessing in any branch of Mathematics. The amount for the scholarship is 25,000/- for first two years and 28,000/- for the next two years. The scholarship is provided by the selection in written test and interview. The written test consists of five sections with 40 marks and 150 minutes time duration. The eligible candidates are selected for the interview.

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP:

        National Board of Higher Mathematics conducts Postdoctoral Fellowship for the candidates who have completed PhD in Mathematics. The age limit for the candidate must be below 35 years. The fellowship is mainly a two year programme and it can be extended one year after the review by NBHM.

ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

     The examination is conducted for all the applicants interested in joining the institute.

For Diploma Degree candidates

     The candidates must have scored 50% marks in Higher Secondary Education and he/she must have passed Urdu language.

For Bachelor’s Degree Candidates

     Candidates must have scored more than 50% in Higher Secondary Education from any recognized Institution. The candidate must have studied Urdu language in 10+ 2 or graduation level.

For Master Degree Candidates

    Candidates must have scored more than 50% in Bachelor’s degree from any recognized Institution/University. The candidate must have studied Urdu language in 10+ 2 or graduation level.

For Doctorate Candidates

    Candidates must have scored more than 55% in Master’s degree from any recognized Institution/University. The candidate must have studied Urdu language in 10+ 2 or graduation level.

     The age limit for the candidates must be below 28 years for Master’s degree courses and for women it is 31 years. There is upper age relaxation for SC/ST candidates is 5 years .The upper age limit is 3 years for OBC candidates .The upper age limit is 10 years for PWD candidates.

     The exam paper consists of two sections with two hours time duration .The first section consists of objective type questions and second section consists of short type answer questions. The paper will be set in Urdu language only.

ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

PET Entrance Exam

         The entrance exam is conducted for Ph D applicants .The candidate are eligible if he/she has passed M.Phil with 50 % marks. The exam Pattern consists of written test of 100 marks and personal interview of 25 marks. The shortlisted candidates in written test are noted for personal Interview.

        There are separate entrance exam conducted for Under Graduate and Post graduate courses. The exam pattern is written examination. The syllabus for written examination is English language, Numerical Abilities and Reasoning. The candidates must have a minimum percentage in 10th /12th for joining Undergraduate courses. The candidates must be eligible with 50% marks in UG for post graduate courses.
