Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs.

His bed was next to the room’s only window. The other man had to depend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for a long time every day. Every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. The man in the other began to live, for those one-hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and colour of the world outside. The man described all the beautiful things in the park outside. He told him about the people passing by. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every colour of the rainbow. Days and weeks passed.

One morning, the nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window. He had died peacefully in his sleep. The attendants took his body away. After a little while, the other man asked if he could be moved to the bed next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the change. And after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone. Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the world outside. He tried very hard to look out of the window. There was only a blank wall.

The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who described such wonderful things outside the window. The nurse answered that the man was blind and could not even see the wall. She said,” Perhaps he just wanted to make you happy.”

Questions:

  1. Why were the two men admitted in the hospital?
  2. How did they spend their time?
  3. What did the man describe?
  4. What happened to the man by the window one morning?
  5. Why did the man encourage the other man in his room?

VI        Read the following story and answer the questions given below.  (10 marks)

The Enlightened Butcher

This story from Mahabaratha brings to light that our spiritual achievement is useless if we neglect our duties or Dharma.

Kaushika was his parent’s only son. “Mother,” he said one day, “ I want to go off into the jungle and devote myself to spiritual studies.” His mother said with concern, “but son, your father and I are very old. Your father is sick and he can hardly move. If you go away, what will happen to us? Who will attend to our needs?”

Kaushika did not listen. He was determined to study the Vedas. His mother cried in vain as she watched her son turn his back on her and leave for the jungle. Eventually Kaushika acquired great mystical powers.

One afternoon, as he was meditating under a tree, a crane flew up, and perched herself on a branch above Kaushika. Some bird droppings fell on Kaushika head. Kaushika furiously threw a gaze at the crane. The crane immediately fell dead. The sage felt sorry for what he had done. “How could I have allowed my anger to take over me that way?” He mourned.

Later in the day, he went to a village to beg for alms. The lady of the house asked him to wait and went to get some food. Right then her husband arrived. She immediately set aside the pot of food she was taking to the sage and went to her husband. After washing his feet, giving him food, and attending his needs, she came back out to give the alms to the sage. The sage was very insulated. “You put your husband before a pious sage? Do you know the power of a Brahmin?” he asked.

She calmly replied, “Yes, a true Brahmin is he who has mastered his anger. Please do not threaten me, I am not a crane that will die with your fiery gaze.” The sage was amazed. How does she know about the crane?” he wondered.

The lady continued, “Oh holy one! You are a learned Brahmin but you have not understood the truth about virtue. If you want to be enlightened, go to Dharmavyadha

who lives in Mathura. Anyone will tell you where he lives.”

The sage thanked the lady and hurried to Mathura. “He must be a great and learned sage indeed,” Kaushika thought to himself. But when he finally reached Dharmavyadha’s place, he found it to be a butcher’s shop! A very ordinary looking man came out and said, “Welcome holy one. I am Dharmavyadha, the man you seek.”

How can a butcher be spiritually enlightened? Kaushika asked in amazement. Dharmavyadha smiled and said with compassion, “ I know the story of the crane and of the woman who sent you here. Come, let us go to my house.”

[EL 1064         Sub: English For Empowerment]

The sage could not contain himself and blurted out, “But killing animals is such a sinful profession! Are you not ashamed?” “I am not,” the butcher calmly said. “ I am engaged in my family trade. I work hard and honestly at it. There is no reason for me to be ashamed of my work!”

“Holy one,” continued the butcher. “If I do injury to other creatures, so do you as you did to the crane.” “As we walk on the soil, we are trampling on numerous creatures. Nor is air devoid of creatures. You see the farmer tilling the land? He is killing so many animals that thrive under the soil.”

They reached the butcher’s house. The Butcher’s wife was doing her household chores and his two boys were playing. The butcher introduced the sage to his wife and boys. Then the butcher entered the house and touched his parent’s feet. “Here is a learned Brahmin from a far off place,” the butcher told his father. “Welcome, holy one”, the father said.

Before leaving the room the butcher remarked, “ My parents are my Gods. My wife and my children attend to them with devotion and love. We consider caring for them to be our greatest duty. In doing one’s duty cheerfully, lies true virtue. This is what the dutiful wife sent you to learn.”

“Oh learned one!” the butcher continued, you have run away from your responsibilities and deserted your aged father and mother. Spiritual achievement is useless if one has neglected one’s Dharma, or duties.” The sage remembered his mother crying, “ Who will look after us when you are gone my son?”

The sage apologized, “You have shown me the path of true virtue, the true meaning of Dharma, Oh pious one. I am deeply indebted to you”. Kaushika immediately returned to his parents and served them lovingly till the end of their days.

Answer the following questions from the passage in complete sentences.

  1. Why did Kaushika leave the house and his parents?
  2. Why did Kaushika kill the crane?
  3. Why did the lady in the house make Kaushika wait for his alms?

The slave at once pulled it out, and the lion and he became friends, living comfortably for sometime together in the cave.

But one day the slave was caught and brought back to the town where his master lived. There he was condemned to be thrown to a famished lion. When the fierce and hungry beast was let loose upon him, it rushed at the poor, trembling slave, but when it came near him it suddenly stopped, smelled at the slave and then leaped around him full of joy and licked his hands and feet. Many people regard Albert Einstein as one of the twentieth century’s greatest geniuses. He was a physicist whose researches into the working of the universe helped other scientists create such things as nuclear energy, space travel and television. Stories about Einstein show that he had a great sense of humour. One such story tells that as a young man with a growing reputation, Einstein received many invitations to go to universities to explain his theories. In these trips he was always chauffeured by the same person- a man called Hans. One evening, on their way to a remote university, Einstein said, “I wish I didn’t have to give my lecture tonight, Hans. I’m so tired. But I can’t let my audience down, Can I?”

“You don’t need to,” said Hans, We’ll change places and I’ll give the lecture for you. I’ve listened to it dozens of times. I don’t understand it, but I know it by heart. And no one knows you at the university, do they? No one will find out.” Einstein eventually agreed with Hans, but said to him, “Don’t try to answer any questions, whatever you do.” They changed places, and at the university Hans was greeted and led to the platform in a great Hall crowded with professors and students. Einstein joined the audience and listened to Hans give his lecture perfectly, and joined in the applause at the end.

However, before Hans could get off the platform, a professor shouted from the audience, “I’d like to ask you a difficult question, but please answer it.” He then asked a question so difficult that Hans had no idea what he was talking about. Einstein thought, “Oh! Dear, now we’re in trouble.” But Hans just laughed and said, “That’s not a difficult question, sir. In fact, it’s so easy even my driver knows how to answer it. Hans, Stand up and answer the question.”

Einstein stood up and answered the question perfectly. They left the university, with Einstein driving. A little later, Hans offered to take over from him. “No, my friend,” laughed Einstein, “it’s a pleasure to drive a genius like you.”

  1. Frame sentences using the words :
  1. receive b) difficult  c) agree  d) genius.
  1. How did the research work of Einstein help the other scientists?

Powerful and wise men stood around him in great numbers. “You wise men”, said the king, “I have a problem, and I want to see who of you is in a position to solve it.” He led the men to a huge door, bigger than anyone had ever seen. The king explained, “Here you see the biggest and heaviest door in my kingdom. Who among you can open it?” some of the courtiers just shook their heads. Others, who were counted among the wise men, looked at the door more closely, but admitted they couldn’t do it. When the wise men had said this, the rest of the court agreed that this problem was too hard to solve. Only one vizier went up to the door. He checked it with his eyes and fingers, tried many ways to move it, and finally pulled on it with a hefty tog. And the door opened. It had just been left ajar, not completely shut and nothing more had needed but the willingness to realize it and the courage to act boldly. 1. Read the following passage and give your answers in about 30 words each:(5 x 2 = 10)

Socialism aims, then, at substituting the motive of social service for the motive of private profit. It holds that men will do better work to make the good life, with the leisure and financial competence it requires, possible for a society. In fact in the long run it is better for themselves, then they will at present consent to do for a society which compels them to enrich the exploiters of their labour in order to avoid starvation for themselves. If socialism is wrong in making this assumption, if the psychology of human being is such that they will not work willingly and well for society but only for themselves, then the whole of the socialist edifice falls to the ground, for this doctrine is the foundation upon which it rests. Either men are socially minded in the sense described, or they are not, and cannot be made so

  1. What is the chief aim of socialism?
  1. Why are men expected to work better in a socialistic setup?
  2. How does the present work that we do for ourselves benefit the exploiters?
  3. What is the basic assumption of socialism that can make it work?
  4. How can socialistic attitude be developed in the citizens?

II.                Read the following passage and give your answers in about 30 words each:-

The National council of educational research and training (NCERT) has done substantial work in the areas of primary school education and secondary education. They have also created awareness amongst the central and state Governments about the wrongs in the present day implementation of education services in the areas of child education. Even educationists and private school authorities have been informed and cautioned.NCERT has been repaired Minimum Levels of Learning (MLL) data for primary and post-primary levels of school education. And these have been or are being circulated to the authorities concerned. If these are adhered to, the children would be able to acquire required competence in various subjects of study besides improving educational standards.

But as NCERT is only an advisory body it cannot force schools and educationists to implement its fact based findings and so the state governments act upon only that portion of the guidance from NCERT which seems appropriate to them, as do the private schools. In certain areas they may also totally disregard the advice from NCERT.

It is, therefore, quite sensible that the NCERT should be empowered, through appropriate channels, to enforce their guidance. And this becomes more urgent in the area of primary school education where children attending classes I to III with school bags loaded with 10 to 12 books has become the order of the day.

  1. Why can NCERT not enforce its guidelines on schools and educationists?            (2 marks)
  2. What is the nature of substantial work done by NCERT?             (2 marks)
  3. What are the advantages of such guidelines? (2 marks)
  4. What is the remedy suggested by the author to bring out efficiency in educational standard of

children?                                                                                                                 (4 marks)

The tug-of-war went on but they could not free the boy’s hand .There were no weapons in the boat. The boat was in the middle of the lake. Even the oars were useless against the thick skin of the crocodile. The boat was almost turning over. Then the boatman told the father “Either you continue to save your son, in which case the boat will surely turn over or all of us will die. I know a crocodile will never let go its hold.
