THE ATHEIST’S CONFESSIONS

At 13 I believed in rose petals

Strewn at the earth-god’s feet.

Agarbatti aromas made me heady

And I ate prasad only after a bath.

At 14 my purse got slashed

in the temple crowds.

At fourteen-and-a-half I began to wonder.

The gods no longer smiled

when I prayed. They couldn’t.

They were idols of stone.

Fifteen, and the Beatles

Became my gods. I grew heady

On Chanel 25, and ate

fish-fingers between sips of gin.

On world Religion Day,

I made a speech.

God didn’t exist, I said.

I was 18, and worshipped myself.

At 20, the rose petals were on my cheeks

and in my hair and in the bouquets

he brought when he took me out to dinner.

Then he took a blade and cut

the flowers from their stems.

I wilted – he grew heady

on the scent.

Twenty-two. I no longer worship

myself, or him.

I look at the sculptures

In the puja room

and wonder: are the gods faintly

Beginning to smile again?

  1. Translate the following text into Tamil.

(10 marks)

Wildlife means more than just, tigers and elephants. Wildlife refers to any undomesticated animal and uncultivated plants. It is difficult to think of wildlife in an urban environment. But, we do share space with wildlife regardless of where we live. Ignorance is a major reason why people do not appreciate nature and wildlife. As the members of a natural community, our well being depends on the existence of life forms. We need a diversity of wildlife around us, because each species plays a key role. For example, life forms are responsible for creating oxygen, disposing of waste, and pollinating crops. In a world where countless life forms become extinct every year, there’s an urgent need for us to understand that everything is connected. None of the five million species on earth, including Homo sapiens, can survive without each other or without healthy habitat. We’ve built cities and towns for people to live in. Now, it’s time that we made the cities more liveable for wildlife too.

  1. Illustrate the views of Whorf, on the basis of how language determines the way in which the speakers of that language view the world from the passage given below.

“the background linguistic system (in other words, the grammar) of each language is not merely a reproducing instrument for voicing ideas but rather is itself the shaper of ideas, the program and guide for the individual’s mental activity, for his analysis of impressions, for his synthesis of his mental stock in trade. Formulation of ideas is not an independent process, strictly rational in the old sense, but it’s a part of particular grammar, and differs, from slightly to greatly, between different grammars…The world is presented in kaleidoscopic flux of impressions which has to be organized by our minds- and this means largely by the linguistic systems in our minds… We cut nature up and organize it into concepts, and ascribe significances as we do, largely we are parties to an agreement to organize in this way- an agreement that holds throughout our speech community and is codified in the patterns of our language.”

(OR)

-Analyse the following poem sociolinguistically, bringing out the linguistic and societal factors and implications:

My mother told me that she

Learnt to conserve and preserve

From Gandhi,

Who would use a pencil till it had become only a butt

But would put the butt in holder

And use it till it died.

No wonder I said his handwriting was so but that he

Could not read it himself,

Dear old man!

Now in aspiring middle-age, I have not one shirt but

Two dozen, mostly gifted from sugar-daddy in the land of the dollars

Not one trouser but a variety of them Levis to shorts to baggy ones,

Not one cycle but a motorcycle and a motorcar

And a wife and kids each with his and her

Clothes, property, things;

No Gandhi here.

O how I yearn to give away and do

My Haj thing,

Or Tirupathi thing or

Something which will make me

Bald as the dear old man.
