HAZRA, SHRI MANORANJAN, [Comm. (M)] West Bengal-Aram Bagh—1971, Son of late Shri Ganesh Chandra Hazra; b. at Vill. Chatra, P.O. Serampore, Distt. Hoogly, West Bengal; Bhadra 13, 1920 (B.S.); ed. at Nandlal Institution, Chatra; m. Smt. Shankari Hazra,. June, 1947; 4 s. and 4 d.; Writer and Journalist; previously associated with Revolutionary Party of Jugantar, Congress, Indian Proletarian Revolutionary Party, C.P.I, and Congress Socialist Party; Member; B.P.C.C. in 1939; imprisoned many times for taking part in Civil Disobedience Movement, Revolutionary and Communist movements and sometimes led an underground life avoiding arrest; President, West Bengal Government sponsored Library Workers’ Union; worked as Assistant Director in Film Studio; connected with many Peasants’ and T.U. Organisations; Member, West Bengal State Legislature, 1952-69.

Social activities.—Worked as a volunteer during earthquake in Bihar in 1933; excavated 2-mile long water basin at Makhla, Distt. Hoogly; organised cooked food canteen for the famine stricken people of Bengal in 1943 and also organised medical relief to save the peasantry from the Malaria epidemic; organised several night schools, and libraries; organised relief works during floods of Burdwan (1943), Chanditula, Khanakul (1956, 1959, 1970).

Hobby.—Gardening.
