Read the passage and answer the questions that follow based on your understanding of the passage :

As the discipline of physical education continues to grow, many professionals are becoming dissatisfied with the term being used to represent the discipline : Physical Education. In the last 50 years, physical education’s professional emphasis on teacher preparation has changed. Whereas teacher preparation was once the primary focus, it is now only one of many professional programs within the discipline. It has become increasingly diversified with the emergence of the exercise and sports sciences, which has led to many new professional programs such as cardiac rehabilitation, adult fitness, sport management, sport medicine and sport communication. Many professionals feel that the term physical education does not accurately describe the current nature of the field and a new term is needed.

Today, practitioners in the schools continued to be referred as physical educators. However, professionals working with other populations and in other settings have adopted different terms to represent the specialized nature of their work. These professionals are referred as athletic trainers, sport medicine specialists, adapted physical educators, exercise physiologists sport psychologists, sport sociologists, fitness trainers, sport specialist, recreation leaders etc. Many terms have been suggested to replace physical education. Instead of using physical education as umbrella term, physical education term would embrace professionals teaching the subject in the school at all levels.

The American Academy of Physical Education endorsed Kinesiology as the new umbrella term for the field. Kinesiology, defined as the art and science of human movement, was believed to reflect the true focus of study. Other terms that frequently have been suggested as a name for the discipline are sport Sciences and Exercise and sport sciences.

Regardless of which term is selected as a name for the discipline, it is important that all professionals realize their responsibility to contribute to the field. Professionals must help physical education establish its identity, its jurisdiction and its leadership. Whether the discipline will continue to grow and realize its potential to enhance the health and well-being of individuals of all ages will depend a great deal on the commitment of professionals to this goal.
