Career in Medicine in India

Career choice is one of the most important decisions that an individual makes in his lifetime. Medicine is a very noble profession that allows an individual to help people in need. The work and contributions of a medical professional are important to individuals and the community as a whole. It enables them to earn a good living and provides for a consistent and secure future.

As per a recent report, there is a shortage of medical practitioners in India. Qualifications required for becoming a Doctor:

Traditional – To become a Homeopathic or Ayurvedic Doctor, degree courses in Homeopathy and Ayurveda are offered both at bachelor and masters levels. A candidate having cleared 12thstandard in science with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English/ Science or Sanskrit for Ayurveda can pursue the bachelor course i.e. B.H.M.S. (Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine & Surgery), which is five and half years long. Similarly, a B.A.M.S. degree (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery) is offered for students wishing to pursue this line. One definitely has to sit through competitive exams and admission is based on merit.

Modern –To become an M.B.B.S. doctor, one must complete 12th standard with science stream with a minimum aggregate of 50% in physics, chemistry and biology and then compete in PMT exams. Upon selection and successful completion, an M.B.B.S. degree is conferred and one can practice medicine. It is common these days for students to go ahead for further studies and acquire an M.D. degree as it improves one’s future prospects.
