About the District :

Dandakaranya of epic Ramayan was nothing but Dang District of Gujarat State. The historical District is the only District of State with dense forest. Total 311 villages are covered by Dang, where even to day 75% of population is living below povertline and 98% population is scheduled tribe, statistics show that long path of Development is still unexplored.

Demographics :

The Population of Dangs District as per 2011 census is 2,26,769 (Male-1,12,972 Female – 1,13,793 and other 04) . About 94% population of the District is tribal population. About 73.84% of the total population falls in BPL category. As per socio-economic survey 2012 , the population of District is 253,353. Around 30,000 people migrate to nearby distinct for employment in sugarcane cutting and grape yards during September May every year.

Culture :

Dang Darbar : Dangs Darbar is a three-day annual cultural extravaganza coinciding with the Holi festivities. The festival is celebrated in the Dang district, located in the Saputara Hills of India. A conspicuous festival of Dang tribe, inhabitants of wooded region Saputara, the Dang Darbar is celebrated just few days before Holi. The exact venue of this festival is Ahwa near Saputara but the festival has drawn its name from the Ahwa Darbar, a one–time venue assembly (Darbar) venue for English ministers and mandarins during the Raj era. Now, the name has been changed to Jamabandi Durbar and the District Collector officiates at it.

Languages & Dialects : Language of people of dang district is basically konkai, Although they are familiar with gujarati and marathai, As we share boundary with maharasthara state.

Art & Literature :

Warli Painting : Warli painting of tribals is famous of dang district.
Bamboo : Tribal people used to make things from bamboo.

Geography :

The Dangs district is situated between the parallels of latitude 20^o 33′ and 21^o 5′ and the meridians of longitude 73^o 27′ and 73^o 57′. The length from north to south of this territory is about 59 kms. (36.7 miles) and from east to west about 50 kms. (30 miles) It is bounded in the North by Surat and Dhule district of Maharashtra State, in the east by Nasik district of Maharashtra State and West by Valsad District. The area covered by the district is 1,764 Sq Km . The district ranks is 25^th in terms of area in the State.

The District is a part of the Eastern Hilly Region and is subdivided into two sub micro regions, namely, Lower Dangs and Upper Dangs on the basis of physiographic climate, geology, soils and natural vegetation.

Physiography of Lower Dangs region is characterized by low hills with an altitude ranging from 560 to 590 meters above MSL. The entire water of this region is drained by Gira, Purna, Khapari and Ambika rivers with their tributaries. The region has a thick vegetation cover. The geological structure of this region is composed of Deccan Trap.

Physiography of Upper Dangs region is a hilly track having thick forest cover. The elevation of this region varies between 675 and 1,290 meters above MSL. The main rivers of this region are Gira Purna, Khapri and Ambika. The geology of this region is formed of Deccan Trap. Soils found in this region are black rock outcrops shallow black, brown and alluvial soils of recent origin.

The Dangs district is essentially a mountainous tract covered with dense forest which starts from the rugged chains of the Sahyadris in the east and extends to the edge of plains of Gujarat State. It starts in the east with chain of rugged mountains running up to about 1,100 meters (3500 ft. ) Most of the area in the Dangs lies in elevation between 300 and 700 meters above mean sea level.

Tourist Places :

Shabridham and Pampa Sarovar :

 

This place is said be be place where shri ram(an hindu god), while his journey through forest, met with shabri, who was a devotee of him, This Place is located in subir village of subir block of dang district, A temple has been constructed here.

Mahal Camp :

Mahal village is 24 km away from Ahwa. And 1.5km away from mahal village. This forest area declared protected forest for animal safety by forest department. Various kinds of animal live including tiger as well, It’s a nice place for tourism where facility of tree house, campfire, huts available for residing

Anjan Kund :

Anjunkund is a village which is around 35 KM from Ahwa to the south and 55 KM from Saputara falls in hills, It is surrounded by Sahayadri hills from east, north & south sides. It is named after ‘Anjani’ – mother of lord hanuman, who lived here, It is said here that Lord Hanuman born here only, There is a temple here in the name of lord hanuman, which is a holy place for people’s of dang district.

Pandav Gufa (Caves) :

Pandav gufa situated in Pandava village on the route to Chinchali village. It is said here that Pandavs in the period of their ‘Vanvas’, Stayed here, One can observe five different rooms(khands) in those caves, One of them is a bigger one(approx. length of 40 to 50 feet), Said to be the room for Bheem

Giradhod :

A natural waterfall which is an eye treat, It’s height is approx 200-250 feet, Almost whole year it is full with water.
