Read the paragraph and answer the following questions based on it :
Perhaps China’s most serious concerns over the rise of India have been the uncertainty over the direction of New Delhi’s foreign policy, especially with regard to its ties with Washington. Indeed, growing US-India defence ties and nuclear cooperation were seen by Beijing as the Bush administration’s attempt to enlist Indian support in constraining China’s rise. New Delhi’s ‘Act East’ policy and its growing ties with Japan, Australia and Vietnam, along with Washington’s pivot to Asia, feed into Beijing’s paranoia of encirclement, even if India has the slightest interest in acting as a junior partner of a US-led containment of China. Perceptions, and in this case, perhaps misperceptions, matter. Meanwhile, India’s growing defence capabilities, ranging from procurement of major weapons systems, enhanced military deployment in areas along the Line of Actual Control, tests of long-range missiles, and maritime power projection further convince China’s strategic analysts that Sino-Indian relations are no longer confined to territorial disputes only, but are assuming greater regional and global significance.
Indeed, the two countries are actively pursing multilateral diplomacy. As emerging economies and developing countries, Beijing and New Delhi share similar views on major issues ranging from climate change, environment, the Doha Round of negotiations in trade, to nuclear disarmament, space non-weaponisation, and a new multipolar global order. In addition, the countries are members of the G20 and the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), a group of emerging markets that have proposed global financial reform and are coordinating their economic policies. And finally, India’s membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation offers the prospect of opportunities for future cooperation, ranging from anti-terrorism to stabilization of the Afghan situation.
