  1. Mention any two methods of determining the nuclear size.
  2. How does the np and pp scattering cross section compare?
  3. What are the two major competing forces in the liquid drop model?
  4. How does binding energy of the odd-odd differ from the even-even nuclei.
  5. What are the limits on the phase shifts for an elastic scattering and a nuclear reaction process?
  6. What is the basic assumption of the continuum theory?
  7. Give the Gamow Teller selection rules for beta decay.
  8. What are neutron stars?
  9. Illustrate Baryon number conservation through a nuclear reaction.
  10. What are Leptons? Give examples.

Answer any four questions.                                                       4 x 7.5 = 30 Marks

  1. Show from the magnetic moment calculation that deuteron is mostly in the singlet state.
  2. Derive Levy’s formula for determination of atomic masses.
  3. Write a note on life time, mass and decay modes of pions.
  4. Explain using the concept of cross sections the compound nucleus theory. What are conclusions of this theoretical model?
  5. Discuss the quark model of nucleons and mesons.

  1. Discuss with necessary theory how the electron scattering experiments lead to the determination of the nuclear size.
  2. What are the basic assumptions of the liquid drop model? Using this model explain the phenomena of nuclear fission.
  3. Explain the optical model of analysing  various types of nuclear reactions.
  4. Explain Gamow’s theory of alpha decay.
  5. Bring out the various quantum numbers of the elementary particles, the classification of elementary particles and the conservation laws.

  4. Name the various types of central potential available to solve the deuteron problem in nuclear physics.
  5. Identify the type of transition either Fermi or Gamow-Teller or both in the following reaction.

  1. On the basis of nuclear shell model, determine the spin and parity of B11 after writing down the nucleon configuration.
  2. Write down the Geiger Nuttal law and explain the various terms in it.
  3. What is Gamow factor in alpha decay? What does it depend on?
  4. Give the Gell-Mann-Nishijima formula. Explain the various quantities in the formula.
  5. What are strange particles? Give examples.

  2. What are the important features of the Levy’s mass formula?
  3. Outline the Optical model of nuclear reactions.

  1. How are the experimental observations of the deuteron explained using the quantum mechanical theory?
  2. Derive the semi-empirical mass formula of Weizacker.
  3. Derive the Breit-Wigner single level formula for resonance scattering.
  4. Describe the important features of the Fermi’s theory of beta decay.

 

  1. (a) The baryon decuplet predicts the Ω hyperon. What are its quantum numbers? (6)

(b) Discuss the possible decay modes of Ω- allowed by the conservation laws and show that the weak decay is the only possibility.                                              (6.5)

  1. Discuss the theory of n-p scattering at low energies and hence find an expression for the scattering cross section for l=0.
  2. a) Give a detailed account of nuclear shell model. Also discuss the merits and drawbacks of the above model.
  3. b) Find the total angular momentum and parity for the ground state of 16S33 nucleus from the shell model .Also find the electric quadrupole moment from collective model.
  4. Explain Gamow’s theory of alpha decay. Derive Geiger -Nuttal law.
  5. Explain briefly resonance states of compound nucleus and obtain Breit -wigner formula for l=0 state.
  6. a) What are Quarks? Give the quark model of i)mesons ii)Protons and antiprotons.
  7. b) Write a short note on the weak and strong nuclear forces.
