About Kendrapara District :

Carved out of the erstwhile District of Cuttack, Kendrapara District is situated in Central Coastal plain zone of Odisha. The District is bounded by Bhadrak District at its North, Jagatsinghpur District at its South, Cuttack District at its West and Bay of Bengal at its East. Kendrapad District lies in 20 degree 20’ N to 20 degree37’ N Latitude and 86 degree 14’ E to 87 degree 01’ E Longitude. The Coastline of Kendrapara District covers 48 Km stretching from Dhamra Muhan to Batighar. Headquarters of Kendrapara District is well known as the Tulasi Khetra. Epics unveil the fact that Lord Balram killed Kandrasura here. Then he married his daughter Tulasi and settled here. Since then the place is known as Kendrapara.

In 1st April, 1993 Cuttack District was bifurcated to form Kendrapara District. Kendrapara city is the administrative headquarters of Kendrapara District. The District covers an area of 2, 644 sq km. There are total 1540 villages in the District comprising 1,439,891 population as per 2001 census. Total male population of the District is 717,695 and female population is 722,196. Literacy rate of the population is 85.93 percent, with 92.45 percent male population and total 79.51 percent female population in the District.

In the present scenario of administrative set up, there are 9 Blocks, 9 Tahsils, 1 Sub-division (Kendrapara) in the District. There are 230 gram Panchayats, 7 Police stations, 1 NAC functioning in the District.

Kendrapara District has a moderate climate. The temperature in the region can go up to 34 degree C in Summer while in Winter the temperature can drop to 13 degree C. The normal rainfall measured in the District is 15101.3 mm.

Agriculture is the main occupation of the people. A little more than 70 percent people dependent on agriculture. Rice, groundnut, green gram, black gram and jute are the main crops grown in the District. However, frequent occurrence of natural calamities viz cyclone, flood and drought has broken the backbone of the people . In order to survive under these conditions, people go for cultivation of their stapple food crop rice during rabi in the assured irrigated areas. Jute is the main cash crop of the District, grown since long. Groundnut is an important oil seed crop of the District. Coconut is the important horticulture crop in Kendrapara District.

The economy of the district is mainly dependent upon cultivation. Out of 100 workers in the District 68 are engaged in Agricultural sector. The economy of the District is primarily rural and based on agriculture and allied activities. More than 75 percent of the total population earns a livelihood from the primary sector.The District is one of the relatively developed Districts particularly in the field of education. There are many important educational institutions in Kendrapara District. Balia Women’s College, Kendrapara Law College, Chandol College, Derabish College, Kendrapara College, Marsaghai College, Tulsi Women’s College are the important colleges of the District. Kendrapara Institute of Engineering and Technology is one of the technical institutes of the District.

There are many picnic spots in Kendrapara District. One of the famous place is ‘Bhitara Kanika’. One can find many wild animals, birds, reptiles and beautiful nature there. Most popular Udaya Giri and Ratna Giri are just 10–15 km drive from Kendrapara. Mainly Buddha murti, Buddha pratima are conserved there. Lord Baladev and Laxmi Mandir can be found at picnic spot Sakhi Bata. Sri Baldevjew Temple is one of the important temples of the District.

Kendrapara District celebrates many festivals round the year. Important festivals like Ratha yatra, Gajalaxmi puja and Durga puja are celebrated with great enthusiasm.Kendrapara has produced a number of well known personalities. Personalities like Md. Massiur Jamma, who bears the record of being the first ever volleyball player of the state to represent the country in the Asian Volleyball championship and SAF games. Famous astronomer, mathematician and writer of Suskhma Sphuta Siddhanta Pandit Sri Gokulananda Routroy (1947–2009) is one among the prominent sons of the soil.

Bhitara Kanika :

 

Bhitara Kanika was under the jurisdiction of the erstwhile Kanika Estate. It is covered with deep mangrove forests and saline rivers and was declared a sanctuary on 21.04.1975. It is a world famous place for natural crocodile breeding. The sanctuary is full of heavenly natural beauty and has innumerous animals like deers, wild boars, monkeys, monitors, pythons and king cobras.

How to Reach :
It can be approached by road from Rajnagar via Khola Check gate. It is about 30 Kms. from Rajnagar by road. Dangmal can also be approached from Gupti by boat through Patsala river and then Bhitarkanika nala in that order. Gupti is about 25 Kms. from Rajnagar and Dangmal is 1 Hr. 15 minutees journey by boat from Gupti. Dangmal can be approached from Chandbali by boat in Baitarani, Brahmani and the Khola creek in the Bhitarkanika Nala in that order. Travelling by boat is advisable as it entails a thrilling experience.

Kanika Palace :

 

Kanika Palace is a massive palace constructed by the King of Kanika, Rajendra Narayan Bhanja Deo. It is constructed on an area of 4 acres of land and the height of the structure is 75 feet. It is situated in Rajkanika Block and is around 50 km from the district headquarters. The beauty of the palace is unbelievable.

How to Reach :
By taking the bus from kendrapara to Rajkanika

False Point Port :

In front of the Batighar, it was the first modern port of Odisha coastline. At the mouth of river Mahanadi & Jamboo, this port was commissioned in the year 1855 and was in working condition till 22nd October 1924. A devastating storm on 22nd September 1885 completely destroyed this port. There was a submerged ship in the nearby sea, which is the reminiscent of the past glory.

How to Reach :
One can reach at False Point Port via Jambu. You can take taxi from elsewhere to reach at Jambu. It is 40 Km away from Kendrapara town. Then by boat you can reach at the historic place, False Point Port.
