Krishna District is one of the agriculturally productive coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh. The district with its Head Quarters at Machilipatnam formerly called Machilipatnam district and later renamed in the year 1859 as Krishna District after holy River Krishna.

Origin of the Name

Krishna District gets its name from the holy river Krishna, the third largest river that flows in India. The river Krishna originates near Mahabaleswar (Maharastra) and joins the Bay of Bengal near Hamsaladevi Village in our district. Krishna is considered the kernel of Telugu Culture and is the birth place of the famous Indian classical dance form – Kuchipudi. The dialect of Telugu spoken in Krishna is widely considered to be the standard form of Telugu.

Location

Krishna District is located on the east coast of India between 15 °-43’N latitude and 17° 10’N. Latitude and between 80° E. longitude and 81°33’E. Longitude, covering an area of about 8,727 Sq.Km. It accounts for 3.17% of the total geographical area of the State.

Boundaries

The district is surrounded in the Eastern & Southern side by the Bay of Bengal, Guntur and Nalagonda on the western and Khammam & Nellore district on the northern side.

Rivers

The only major river in the district is Krishna, Other riverlets include Muneru, Tammileru and Budameru.Besides there are some hill streams like Jayanthi, Kattaleru, Ippalavagu, Upputeru, Paleru, Ballaleru, Nidimiyeru etc. This district shares with the Nellore district one of the large fresh waterlakes on the east coast, namely, Kolleru.

Area of Krishna District

    The population of Krishna District is 45.17 lakhs (2011 Census), making it the 34th in India and 4th in AP. The population density is 519 per sq Kms (AP: 308 per sq km; India: 382 per sq km). Krishna has a gender ratio of 997 women for 1000 males (AP: 992 per 1000; India: 940 per 1000) and a literacy rate of 74.37 percent. (AP: 67.66%; India: 74.04%). Agriculture is the main occupation of the people in our district.

Overview

An official Census 2011 detail of Krishna, a district of Andhra Pradesh has been released by Directorate of Census Operations in Andhra Pradesh. Enumeration of key persons was also done by census officials in Krishna District of Andhra Pradesh.

Population

In 2011, Krishna had population of 4,517,398 of which male and female were 2,267,375 and 2,250,023 respectively. In 2001 census, Krishna had a population of 4,187,841 of which males were 2,117,401 and remaining 2,070,440 were females. Krishna District population constituted 5.34 percent of total Maharashtra population. In 2001 census, this figure for Krishna District was at 5.50 percent of Maharashtra population.

Population Growth Rate

There was change of 7.87 percent in the population compared to population as per 2001. In the previous census of India 2001, Krishna District recorded increase of 13.22 percent to its population compared to 1991.

Density of Population

The initial provisional data released by census India 2011, shows that density of Krishna district for 2011 is 518 people per sq. km. In 2001, Krishna district density was at 480 people per sq. km. Krishna district administers 8,727 square kilometers of areas.

Literacy Rate

Average literacy rate of Krishna in 2011 were 73.74 compared to 68.85 of 2001. If things are looked out at gender wise, male and female literacy were 78.30 and 69.18 respectively. For 2001 census, same figures stood at 74.39 and 63.19 in Krishna District. Total literate in Krishna District were 3,009,718 of which male and female were 1,598,959 and 1,410,759 respectively. In 2001, Krishna District had 2,539,974 in its district.

Sex Ratio

With regards to Sex Ratio in Krishna, it stood at 992 per 1000 male compared to 2001 census figure of 978. The average national sex ratio in India is 940 as per latest reports of Census 2011 Directorate. In 2011 census, child sex ratio is 935 girls per 1000 boys compared to figure of 963 girls per 1000 boys of 2001 census data.

Child Population

In census enumeration, data regarding child under 0-6 age were also collected for all districts including Krishna. There were total 435,884 children under age of 0-6 against 498,597 of 2001 census. Of total 435,884 male and female were 225,220 and 210,664 respectively. Child Sex Ratio as per census 2011 was 935 compared to 963 of census 2001. In 2011, Children under 0-6 formed 9.65 percent of Krishna District compared to 11.91 percent of 2001. There was net change of -2.26 percent in this compared to previous census of India.

Urban Population

Out of the total Krishna population for 2011 census, 40.81 percent lives in urban regions of district. In total 1,843,660 people lives in urban areas of which males are 923,841 and females are 919,819. Sex Ratio in urban region of Krishna district is 996 as per 2011 census data. Similarly child sex ratio in Krishna district was 938 in 2011 census. Child population (0-6) in urban region was 176,963 of which males and females were 91,315 and 85,648. This child population figure of Krishna district is 9.88 % of total urban population. Average literacy rate in Krishna district as per census 2011 is 81.13 % of which males and females are 84.96 % and 77.30 % literates respectively. In actual number 1,352,126 people are literate in urban region of which males and females are 707,349 and 644,777 respectively.

As per 2011 census, 59.19 % population of Krishna districts lives in rural areas of villages.
