About Mandi District :
The present District of Mandi was formed with the merger of two princely states Mandi and Suket on 15th April 1948, when the State of Himachal Pradesh came into existence. The district is situated between 31-13-50 and 32-04-30 north latitude and 76-37-20 and 77-23-15 east longitude. It is bounded by Kangra on the north-west, Hamirpur & Bilaspur in the west, Arki tehsil of Solan district in the south, Shimla district in the south-west and Kullu district in the east. The district has 2 main rivers viz. the Beas and the Satluj. The total geographical area of the district is 3,950 sq.km. As per Census 2011, the total population of the district is 999,777 out of which 498,065 are males and 501,712 are females. The district is divided into 10 Sub-Divisions, 16 Tehsils , 7 Sub Tehsils and 10 Development Blocks. The district has a number of Archeological objects of interest, in which the temples form the main chunk. The larger and more important temples of the district are trilokinath temple, panchvaktra temple, salanu rock inscription and bhootnath temple. The places of tourist interests in the district are Prashar lake, Barot valley, Janjehli and Rewalsar lake.

Mandi: Mandi is also known as “Chotti Kashi” due to its similarity with Varanasi in respect of Ghats on the bank of Beas River and temples of Lord Shiva near the Ghats. The place is often described as cultural capital of Himachal Pradesh due to its rich culture, traditions and temple architectural heritage. In ancient times Mandi was not only a business centre on the old silk route to Tibet but also a centre for cultural exchange. Mandi, the abode of Baba Bhoot Nath, was known as Mandavya Nagari as Mandav Rishi mediated on a rock, known as Kolsara, in the Beas river. The famous International Shivratri Fair is celebrated every year during months of February/March. Dieties from different corners of the District throng this town during the fair. People of Mandi are known for their liveliness and distinct life style embedded in faith and traditions. There are many temples in Mandi Town like Triloki Nath Temple at Purani Mandi, Raja Madhav Temple in DC Office Complex, Bhoot Nath Temple at famous Chouhata Bazar, Tarna Shayamkali Temple on Tarna Hills overlooking Mandi Town, Panchvaktra Mahadev Temple on the confluence of Suketi and Beas River, Ardhanareshwar Temple at Samkhetar Street, Bhimakali Temple at Bheuli. In addition many other temples of archaeological and religious importance can be visited. Historical Ghantaghar, Indira Market, Victoria Bridge and Gurudwara are other famous places of interest in the Town. It is a base camp to visit tourist places such as Prashar, Barot, Joginder Nagar, Kamlah Fort, Shikari Devi, Kamrunag, etc.

Ghanta Ghar : Historical Ghanta Ghar in the middle of the town was constructed in the year 1939. The three storied pagora style architechral heritage is located in the centre of a commercial complex known as Indira market. The ring bell of considerable weight is installed in the first floor. A small park known as Subhash Udyan has been developed for relaxing around Ghanta Ghar and famous temple of Goddess Sidh Kali also exist here.
Victoria Bridge : Victoria Birdge is the first bridge of the town which connects Purani Mandi and Mandi town. It was built by the King of Mandi, Raja Vijayi Singh Sen with help of Britishers in the year of 1877. This bridge had been constructed like the Hanging Victoria Bridge on Tames River in England. This is constructed on the style of Jhulla bridge and still operational for small vehicles.
Gurudwara : Gurudwara near Paddal Ground Mandi alongside NH-21 is an important religious place in Mandi town. Sikh Guru Nanak Dev Ji visited Mandi and Guru Gobing Singh Ji stayed at Bhuili for more than six months. The construction of Gurudwara of Mandi was started by Raja Ajbar Sen in 1527 AD and was later on reconstructed by Raja Joginder Sen, Rani Amrit Kaur and Dina Nath the Chief Secretary of Mandi State. Guru Gobind Singh Ji was gifted many things by the Raja of Mandi which he donated these to Gurudwara. Guru Gobind Singh Sahib’s belongings i.e. Holy Bed, Holy Rawab, Holy Gun, Holy Gun Kuppy and Holy Talai (Matterss) are still preserved in the Gurudwara. There is also an rock known as Kolsara in River Beas on which Guru Gobind Singh Sahib used to meditate daily during his stay in Mandi.

Prashar: Located at an altitude of 2730 mtr. Prashar is known for Prashar lake, sloppy meadows, dense forest and the panoramic view of snow clad ranges of Dhauladhar. The “Prashar Lake” which has perimeter of about 300 mtr. is decorated by a floating island in it. Its crystal clear water adds to the charm of this scenic spot. Traditionally, it is believed that the lake was formed as result of striking of rod (Gurj) by Rishi Prashar and water came out and took shape of the lake. An ancient Pagoda style temple dedicated to the Rishi Prashar, the patron God of Mandi region, stands besides the lake. The temple has been constructed by the King Ban Sen in 13-14th century with the Rishi being present in the form of a Pindi (stone). It is also said that the whole temple was built by using single deodar tree and it took 12 years to complete the temple construction. A walk around the lake gives a mystical experience of calmness of the surroundings. A visit to Parashar is a perfect blend of spiritual journey and exploring into the serene and beautiful Himalayan mountains. Several camping sites are also located here and it is the base for numerous easy & hard treks.
People from Mandi and other adjoining Districts visit the place for worshiping Prashar Rishi and believe that their wishes shall be fulfilled by blessings of the Rishi. In the month of June “Saranauhali” fair takes place which is attended by large number of locals from Mandi and Kullu Districts. A forest Rest House, HPPWD Rest House and Sarain of temple committee are available for night stay.

Rewalsar: Rewalsar is an important religious places for Hindus, Sikhs and Buddhists alike. The natural lake at Rewalsar is famous for its floating reed islands and fishes. Hindu, Buddhist and Sikh shrines exist along the periphery of Lake. Legend has it that the great teacher and scholar Padmasambhava used his enormous powers to take flight to Tibet from Rewalsar. It is believed that tiny islands of floating reed in Rewalser Lake have the spirit of Padamasabhava embodied in it. An imposing statue of Padamsambhava is also built in Rewalsar. At this place Sage Lomas is believed to have performed his penance to appease Lord Shiva. The Gurudwara Shri Rewalsar Sahib is associated with the tenth Guru, Guru Gobind Singh who called upon Pahari Rajas to be united in his fight against Mughals. People of all religion come to Rewalsar for a Holi bath on Baisakhi. There are three Buddhist monasteries at Rewalsar. It has a Gurudwara that was built in 1930 by Raja Joginder Sen of Mandi. There are Hindu temples which are dedicated to Lord Krishna, Lord Shiva and sage Lomas alongside the lake. Naina Devi Ji Temple: Situated at a distance of 10 Km from Rewalsar a temple of Naina Mata exist on a hill top. It is believed that eye of Sati fell on the place and a temple of Naina Devi was built on this sacred place. Devotees from all corners of the State visit the temple throughout the year. The place is surrounded by pine trees and presents a panoramic view of Balh & Sarkaghat Valleys. People also love to trek to this place from Rewalsar. On way to Naina Devi temple we come across another lake known as Kunt Bhayo named after Kunti, the mother of Pandavas. It is said that Arjun created the lake to quench the thrist of his mother. There exist six other lakes of legend locally known as Sar in this area. Most of the water in these lakes is collected during the rainy season.
REWALSER MONESTRY: It is most sacred place for Buddhists in Himachal Pradesh. According to popular legend, the daughter of Raja Arashadhar of Mandi State was initiated to tantric discipline by Padmasambhava. This irked the courtiers of the king and their continuous instigation led the king to order the burning of the Padmasambhava alive on pyre. But the burning pyre turned into a water pool and Master survived by transforming himself into a lotus. It is believed that tiny islands of floating reed in Rewalser Lake have the spirit of Padamasabhava embodied in it.

SUNDER NAGAR:-
Sunder Nagar is situated at a distance of 175 km from Chandigarh on Chandigarh Mandi National Highway-21. Capital of old Suket state is a sacred place where Shuk Dev Muni meditated in a cave. It has an average elevation of 861 meters (2824 feet).
TOURISTS ATTRACTIONS:- As the name suggests Sundernagar is a beautiful town surrounded by green hills and is the Gateway of Balh Valley. The charm of the place has been added by an artificial lake created by Beas Satluj Link Project completed in the year 1978. There are many places of tourist attraction in around Sundernagar. Mahamaya Temple is situated on a hill top near the town and house the patron goddess Mahamaya of the Sen Rulers of Old Suket State. Shuk Dev Vatika is situated near to BBMB reserviour and was developed by Raja Lakshman Sen of Suket. The vatika is frequented by tourists and locals inhabitants. There is an ancient cave dating back to Puranas. During Pre-Mahabharata period Rishi Shukdev meditated at this place. It is believed that the cave leads to Haridwar and Rishi Shukdev used this cave to take bath in holy Ganga every morning. It is said that pandavas visited the place and Bhim stopped a rock falling on the enterence of the cave. The mark of his hand known as Bhim Panja can be seen at the enterance of the gate. Holy water in the D shaped pond is said to cure many diseases. Jangam Baag is located in BBMB colony in the town and has an ancient temple of Radha-Krishana, fish pond and is surrounded by lush green trees. Hateshwari Temple is situated on Sundernagar Baggi Road at a distance of about eight km from Sundernagar. The ancient Shiv Temple at Mahadev is near about 2 km from Dhanotu Chowk on Karsog Road and is believed to be built by the Pandavas in one night. Murari Devi temple is located at the top of a hill top named Murari Dhar in the West of Sunder Nagar. Distance of Murari Mata Temple from Mandi is about 75 km and from Sunder Nagar Bus stand is 55 km. The place have panoramic view of regions of four districts viz. Kullu, Mandi, Hamirpur & Bilaspur.

Kamrunag : Situated at a height of 3,334 Mtr. Kamrunag is known for the lake and the temple besides the lake. View of Dhauladhar Range and Balh Valley adds to the scenic beauty of the spot where the lake and pent roof temple of Dev Kamrunag is surrounded by thick forests of deodar. As per tradition, Kamrunag is the King Yaksha of Mahabharta and worshiped by Pandavas. There is a tradition of offering gold, silver and coins in the lake by devotees on the fulfillment of their wishes by Dev Kamrunag.It is not possible to estimate the quantity of gold ,silver and coins of other matel that lie at the bottom of the lake. For nature lovers, visit to Kamrunag is a visit to paradise. It takes 3 to 4 hours to complete the on foot journey from Rohanda to Kamrunag on a steep mountain path of about 6 Km.

Shikari Devi:- Shikari is just 16 Km from Janjehli and connected by a jeepable Forest road. It is situated at an altitude of 3359 Mtr. Thick forests on the way to Shikari are amazing. Being the highest peak of Mandi District it is also called Crown of Mandi. Vast green pastures, captivating sunrise and sunset, panoramic view of snow ranges make this place favorite to nature lovers. The place receives a lot of snow during winters. The place can be approached from Karsog which is just 21 Km from Shikari Devi. On the Shikari peak, there is a roofless temple of Shikari Devi, the Goddess of hunters and this temple is said to be established (Sathapit) by Pandavas. It is said that sage Markanday also meditated at this place for number of years. It has been observed that despite the fact that temple has no roof, no snow is spotted in temple premises during winters when the entire region around this temple is covered upto several feet by snow. Visitors can trek to Chindi, Karsog, Janjehli through different trek routes from Shikari. Adventurists can visit Kamrunag by undertaking a day long journey of 16 Km by trekking the vast spread pastures on this hill top route with breathtaking scenic beauty and perfect calmness.

Janjehli :- The picturesque Janjehli is situated at an elevation of 2150 Mtr. A lush green valley with agricultural fields in gentle slopes, apple orchards, hills covered with pine and deodar trees and a small river having crystal clear water moving like a snake through various criss-crossed hills Janjehli alongwith adjoining Keolidhar, Bagsaid valleys are a gift of nature to this district. Janjehli is loved by trekker and nature lover alike. This valley, adorned by snow during winters, is no less than heaven on the earth. The art lovers must have glimpses of traditional wood carving and metal work. Visit to Janjehli is not complete without having blessing of Shikari Mata. Budha Kedar: Situated at an altitude of 9000 feet Budha Kedar can be visited by trekking a distance of 4 Kms from HPTDC Trekker’s Hostel at Katroo. The place is endowed with natural beauty. Deodar trees, streams of crystal clear water attract the tourists. The traditions have it that during exile Pandavs came here and saw Nandi at this place. Nandi jumped on a rock to save itself from Bhima of Mahabharata and disappeared through the rock. The hole has the shape of the back of the bull. People worship at this place and take holy bath in the nearby stream. Pandav Shila (Rock): Situated just 3 Kms ahead of Janjehli village on the bank of Bhekhli Khad in village Dhar Jarol Pandav Shila is believed to be of Mahabharata era. People believe that if a pebble thrown on the rock stays on it their wishes are fulfilled. It is also said that a person with true belief can have slight movement of the top of the rock.

Chauhar Valley
Jhatingri: Jhatingri is a beautiful place where the hills are covered with thick Deodar trees. The green and serene environment with beautiful landscape is nature’s bounty for humanity. It was once the summer capital of Mandi State. Palaces of King & Queen were constructed here but now only the remains of the old heritage structures are left. Hurang Narayan Temple: Hurang Narayan is the most revered god of the Chauhar Valley. This village is covered with thick forest. People can’t cut wood from this forest for their use. No one can enter in the forest with sharp arms. Smoking is prohibited in Hurang village and no one can enter this village with tobacco product. No one is also allowed to enter the village with lather materials i.e. Shoos, Belt, Purse etc. People of this village are following these rules from centuries ago and no one has the courage to break these rules. The temple of Hurang Narayan is made of Pahari Style and Kahika fair is held after every 5 years in which the Nad (Priest) of Gods Hurang Narayan dies and get life again with the power of Gods Hurang Narayan. It is believed that centuries ago Gods Hurang Narayan was affected with leprosy and was cured by people of Nad community. After that accident, Kahika fair is organised in Hurang village after every 5 years in which people performed Chhidra to remove all their sins. It is also said that the King of Mandi State Raja Sahib Sen’s wife named Parkash Dai has no child. She prayed in Hurang Narayan temple and the Gods blessed her with son and the name of the son was named Narayan Sen. The Gods Hurang Narayan participates in Shivatri fair and other fairs every year and the journey made on foot. The people has the great faith in Hurang Narayan. People pray to him for rain for their crops. Temples of Ghaddoni Narayan and Pashakot are other famous temples of the region.

Karsog, a Sub Division of Mandi District is Situated an altitude of 2100 Mtr., Karsog is a land of faith, forests and fertile fields. Places of interest in Karsog Valley
Mamleshwar Mahadev Temple: In the ancient Mamleshwar Mahadev temple in Mamel, Gauri-Shankar can be seen sitting on lotus. The two Pagoda Style temples in this complex have intricate wooden carvings. An old rope existing in the temple having diameter about 4 inch was used for human sacrifice known as Bhunda. A drum made of a bush stem locally known as Bhekhal and a grain of wheat weighing 250 grams displayed in the temple are amazing.
Emergence of a number of Shivlingas in this excavations in this recent past near the temple and existence of stone statues of Shiv and Vishnu in this temple indicates that a Shikhra Style stone temple existed here earlier. The temple is also related to Bhrigu Rishi and Lord Parshuram.
Kamaksha Devi Temple:
In the valley itself and about 8 Km away from Karsog temple of Kamaksha Devi is situated in vill. Kao. According to Puranas the temple was established by Lord Parshuram. The Pagoda Style temple is famous for its wood carving and is said to be inspired by the Devi to the Carpenter herself. The Goddess is incarnation of Mahishasurmardini and there was practice of Buffalo sacrifice in the temple till recent past.
Mahamaya Bhuneshwari temple:
Situated at a place named Pangna which is about 24 Km from Karsog on Karsog-Mandi road. Pangna was the capital of old Suket State and is also related to Pandavas who, it is said, have spent their time there during exile. The temple is in the shape of a fort having six stories and a height of 52 feet. For this reason the temple is also known as Devi Kot.
Mool (Original) Mahunag temple:
Located at Bakhari at an altitude of 1850 Mtr. And is 24 Km from Karsog towards Shimla. The temple was built in 14-15th century. Mahunag is believed to be incarnation of Karan of Mahabharata. The nag devta is worshiped all over the State and its temples exist all over Himachal Pradesh.
The people of Karsog area worship Shiv, Shakti and Nags and for that reason temples are found in almost each village of the valley. Nag Sunani temple Churag, Nag Sarhi, Nag Dhamooni’s temples at Dhamoon Tibba, Seri and Damehal, Somleshwar Mahadev Soma Kothi, Tebani Mahadev, Deo Baryogi temple, Chawasi Sidh temple are some of the famous temples.
Chindi: Situated over a ridge of Karsog valley Chindi having an altitude 1825 Mtr. is 11 Km from Karsog on Karsog-Shimla road. It has a spectacular view of Karsog valley and mountain ranges. The place is famous for dense forests of Deodar and Pine and its apple orchards. A walk through forest path on the surrounding hills is walker’s paradise. A temple of Chandika Mata of Pahari Style of Architecture also exist here and have beautiful wood carvings. Tattapani
A place called Tattapani is famous for hot water springs on the side of Satluj River and backwaters of Kol dam.
Situated at a distance of 53 Km from Shimla and is entry point to Karsog Sub Division. The place is famous for Sulphur containing hot springs which stands submerged in the artificial lake formed there due to construction of Kol Dam Hydro Electric Project.
Dhamoon
Dhamoon peak is having an altitude of – Mtr. A temple of Dhamooni Nag exist on the peak. The place provides a panoramic view of the peaks of Shimla, Kullu, Lahul & Spiti and Kinnaur. The place can be visited by undertaking on foot journey from Mahavan or Sianj Bagra on Karsog-Kelodhar-Seri-Sianj or Mahavan road towards Rampur Busehar. Trekking from Sianj Bagra/Mahavan to the Dhamoon peak is a thrilling visit through dense Deodar forests. Seri, Chirag, Mahavan, Sianj Bagra near the peak give an opportunity of stay in apple orchards and peaceful, green and clean surroundings.
Chhatri
Situated at a distance of 107 Km from Mandi via Janjehli and 155 Km via Karsog Chhatri is in one of the far flung region of Mandi District. Chhatri is known for dense Deodar forests, apple orchards and Magru Mahadev/Chatreshwar Mahadev temple. The temple is designed in Pahari Style of temple architecture. The temples is famous for its wood craft and events sequences of Ramayana & Mahabharata on this ceiling of the roof of this temple.

It is situated at a distance of 135 Km from Mandi via Bali Chowki. The valley is a less known place and thus not frequented much by tourists. Kholi, Tungasi Dhar are places blessed with natural beauty. The valley is adorned with snow in the winters.

Panjain and Thachi Village
These are two villages situated in the middle of thick forests of deodar, pine and tosh trees. Both villages offer beautiful scenery and base camps for adventure loving tourists. The famous temple of Bithu Narayan is situated in Thachi village while the temple of Punderik Rishi is located in village Panjain.

Kamlah Fort: The fort of Kamlahgarh is the most famous & invincible fort of Mandi State and is situated near the boundary of erstwhile Kangra State in Sandhole Tehsil. The fort is in fact a group of six forts and these are spread over an area of 360 Bighas of land. The fort was constructed about four hundred years. The construction of the fort was started during the reign of Raja Hari Sen (1605-1637) and was completed by his son Raja Suraj Sen.
The fort is a unique example of human effort and architecture. It could be conquered for the first time in 1840 by Sikhs however its possession was regained in 1846 by the ruler of Mandi State with the help of the British. At the top of the fort the famous temple of Baba Kamlahiya is situated. The place have panoramic view of distant places of Mandi, Kangra and Hamirpur Districts.The fort is looked after by Language & Cultural Department of the State Government. ‘Kharak Bijni’ Canon in the fort is an example of remarkable metal craft. There were 22 wells for the provision of water in the fort out of which 7 are still safe.
