Strategic location, state of the art facilities, low tariffs and huge potential for future development is what best describes the deep sea port of Gopalpur. Located along the east coast of India in the state of Odisha, Gopalpur is the key port for handling the growing marine traffic.
Situated between Paradip and Visakhapatnam port, Gopalpur offers excellent rail and road connectivity. The broad gauge Howrah-Visakhapatnam-Chennai east coast trunk route which runs parallel to the east coastline is just 6 km away from Gopalpur port site. Close proximity to NH5 (Kolkata-Chennai) and State Highway No 7 and 17 provide excellent road connectivity to and from Gopalpur.
After the erstwhile fair weather port was hit and destroyed by the super cyclone in 1999, the Government of Odisha (GoO) decided to develop the non-function fair weather port to an all weather direct berthing port.
Starting with three deep water berths and two dry cargo berths, each capable of handling 120,000 DWT, the envisioned master plan is to have 15 to 20 berths of 18.5m depth along three separate harbors. Initially port will have storage capacity 300,000 ton iron and 600,000 ton coal which can be later upgraded as per requirement.
Government of Odisha has awarded this ambitious task of developing the Gopalpur port to Orissa Stevedores Limited (OSL).
