SALIENT FEATURES :

 

History : Prakasam District came into existence on 02-02-1970 with the carving out portions of Markapur Revenue Division from Kurnool, Ongole Revenue Division from Guntur and Kandukur Revenue Division from Nellore Districts.
Origin of the Name The Name of the District was Ongole District to begin with. It was renamed as Prakasam District in 1972 in memory of the eminent freedom fighter, later Chief Minister of the composite Madras State and the first Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh State, late Sri Tanguturi “Prakasam Panthulu, “Andhra Kesari” who was born at Vinodarayuni palem, a hamlet of Kanuparthi village of Naguluppala Padu Mandal of this district.
Location The District is situated in tropical region between14-57′-00″ to 16-17′- 00′ Northern latitude and 78-43-00′ to 80-25’-00″ Eastern longitude.
Boundaries The District is bounded by the following places and features on all the four sides. East : Bay of Bengal West : Kurnool District North : Partly by Guntur and Mahaboobnagar Districts. South : Partly by Nellore and Cuddapah Districts.
River Basins The District is watered by the Gundlakamma, Manneru, Musi and Paleru Rivers besides small rivers like Thammileru, Sagileru and Gudisileru and streams like Ogeru vagu, Nallavagu and Vedimangala vagu.
Area of praksam District The District occupies an area of 17,626 Sq.Kms. with a density of 174 persons per Sq.Km. The area of the district is much more in size when compared to other coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh. This district has 102 KMs. of coastline spread over in 10 Mandals.

Overview
An official Census 2011 detail of Prakasam, a district of Andhra Pradesh has been released by Directorate of Census Operations in Andhra Pradesh. Enumeration of key persons was also done by census officials in Prakasam District of Andhra Pradesh.
Population
In 2011, Prakasam had population of 3,397,448 of which male and female were 1,714,764 and 1,682,684 respectively. In 2001 census, Prakasam had a population of 3,059,423 of which males were 1,552,332 and remaining 1,507,091 were females. Prakasam District population constituted 4.02 percent of total Maharashtra population. In 2001 census, this figure for Prakasam District was at 4.01 percent of Maharashtra population. Population Growth Rate: There was change of 8.47 percent in the population compared to population as per 2001. In the previous census of India 2001, srikakulam District recorded increase of 16.39 percent to its population compared to 1991.

Density Of Population:
The initial provisional data released by census India 2011, shows that density of Prakasam district for 2011 is 193 people per sq. km. In 2001, Prakasam district density was at 174 people per sq. km. Prakasam district administers 17,626 square kilometers of areas.
Literacy Rate:
Average literacy rate of Prakasam in 2011 were 63.08 compared to 57.38 of 2001. If things are looked out at gender wise, male and female literacy were 72.92 and 53.11 respectively. For 2001 census, same figures stood at 69.35 and 45.08 in Prakasam District. Total literate in Prakasam District were 1,904,435 of which male and female were 1,107,686 and 796,749 respectively. In 2001, Prakasam District had 1,532,126 in its district.
Sex Ratio:
With regards to Sex Ratio in Prakasam, it stood at 981 per 1000 male compared to 2001 census figure of 971. The average national sex ratio in India is 940 as per latest reports of Census 2011 Directorate. Prakasam District Urban Population 2011

Out of the total Prakasam population for 2011 census, 19.56 percent lives in urban regions of district.
