About the District :

 

On 26th January 2008 Pratapgarh got the proud of being 33rd district shown on the map of Rajasthan. It is created by the areas taken from Udaipur, Banswara and Chittorgarh districts. As a newly created district Pratapgarh includes the tehsil area Arnod, Pratapgarh and Chotisadri from Chittorgarh district, Dhariawad from Udaipur district and Pipalkhoont from Banswara district.  Pratapgarh is situated in the southeastern partof Rajasthan in Chittorgarh district. The area adjoins Udaipur and Bhilwara districts of Rajasthan and Mandsaur district of Madhya Pradesh. It is situated at the junction of the Aravali mountain ranges and the Malwa Plateau; hence the characteristics of both prominently feature in the area. Pratapgarh is located at 24.03° North & 74.78° East. It has an average elevation of 491 meters(1610 feet). Well known for pure gold and glass-inlay handmade unique jewellery called “Thewa”.

Covered with natural beauty and lifestyle of Vagad, Mewad and Malwa this new district is famous by the name of KANTHAL. Trible dominated population is the rich Ganga-Jamuna  culture of this district.

From the historical view, this is a place where the emperors of Mewar Rajwansh ruled which has been famous as a name of Devaliya state in the history whose capital has been situated 10 Km. west from Pratapgarh named avasthit devaliya town. District’s sub-tehsil Devgarh’s historical fort on which roof clock is placed which is created to show the time from sunlight. In the fort historic remains of royal houses is yet available. Devgarh’s then Emperor Maharaval Pratap Singh of independent Rajasthan established the “Pratapgarh” nagar which is covered by perkota (boundary walls) from four directions. In the perkota (boundary walls) there are 56 link roads and 6 important city gates which show its design and citizens lifestyle. Just after independace, from 1948 to 1952, it was district headquater but after reorganisation of districts due to administrative and political issues  district headquater has been changed.

Pratapgarh also have good scope of Eco Tourism. The Sita Mata Wildlife Sanctuary encompasses good Fauna and Flora; if you are lucky you can spot Flying squirrel, Black Naped Monarch, Lesser Florican etc.

Sita Mata Wildlife Sanctuary

Sitamata Sanctuary is spread over the Aravali and Vindhyachal ranges. It is the only forest where teak trees of building value are found. The thickly vegetated sanctuary has about 50% teak trees beside salar, tendu, amla, bamboo and bel etc. Three rivers flow through the forest; Jakham and Karmoj are the major ones. The key fauna of the sanctuary are leopard, hyena, jackal, fox jungle cat, porcupine, spotted deer, wild bear, four horned antelope and nilgai etc. The most important and conspicuous animal of the sanctuary is the flying squirrel, which can be observed gliding between the trees during thr night. The sanctuary is also associated with mythological events; it is believed that Sita, wife of Lord Rama stayed here during the period of her exile in the ashram of Saint Valmiki.

Jakham Reservoir

Jakham Reservoir is located at 24°10’30” N latitude and 74°35’30” E longitude at village Anuppura of Pratapgarh Tehsil of Pratapgarh District, in Rajasthan. It was completed in the year 1986. It is constructed on river Jakham, which is a tributary of river Mahi. The project provides irrigation benefits to tribal people. The area near the dam is hilly and consists of waste land, hence a pickup weir at Nagalia, which is 13 km away from dam is constructed from which main canal emerges. The catchment area falls in typical sub-tropical sub-humid to humid climate condition, characterized by mild winter and moderate summer with high relative humidity during the months of July-September. Mean annual PET varies from 1,301 to 1,400 mm.

Gautameshwar Temple

Gautameshwar Temple is located 3 KM away from Arnod Teshsil of PratapGarh District. It is one of the famous temples in the area and valued as a Haridwar in local region where people can get free from their sins. The temple is dedicated to lord Shiva. Temple is worth place for Mewar, Malwa and Vagad Community. According to a mytholgy; “Sultan of Malwa” tried to destroy the temple and made a wide cut into the Shivlinga using his sword.

Devgarh

Devgarh is a famous ancient place of Pratapgarh district. Nowadays it is a sub-tehsil of Pratapgarh district. Devgarh is located on a small hill, 13 KM away from Pratapgah City and it is also known as “Devliya“. Earlier it was the captial of Prtapgarh and famous as Devliya state. This place is surrounded by small hills and situatated at average elevation of 1809 feet from sea level. Rajmahal, old Bawadia, Catchment areas and Jain temples are located in Devgarh. A famous temple of “Beejamata” is also situated here, where a fair takes place every year. Another temple of lord Raghunath is placed in Rajmahal itself, where a solar clock is placed on the top of it. The clock tells time according to the light of sun. Some of the ponds are Tejsagar and Sonela. Hari temple, Raghunath temple, Goverdhan temple and Beejamata temple truly justifies the name Devliya.

Bhanwar Mata Temple

Bhanwar Mata Temple is located 3 KM away from Chhoti Sadri Teshsil of Pratapgarh district. This ancient temple of Bhanwar Mata was even popular in the fifth century also. Bhanwar Mata temple was built by King Gori of “Manvaiyani genus” in the year 491 AD. Temple is also known as “Bhanwar Mata Shakti Peeth”. The presence of Waterfall near the temple makes the place live and worth to visit.
