About Tawang District :

Tawang- The beautiful land of the Monpas is located in Western Arunachal Pradesh on the international borders with China and Bhutan. It is situated at the height of 3500 mtrs from the sea level on the mountainous range of the Northern Himalayas. The Area of this District is approximately 2,172 Sq. Km and is bounded by Tibet (China) to the North, Bhutan to the South-West and Sela ranges separated from West Kameng District in the East. Its snow capped peaks, pleasant lakes, congenial climate, friendly and hospitable people continue to entice the people who visit. This magical land evokes images of awesome mountain views, remote hamlets, quaint and sleepy villages, magical Gompas, tranquil lakes and mesmerizing mountains. At Tawang, one has a heavenly tryst with nature and there is a heady mixture of ancient history, mishmash religion and glorious legends. The Tawang District is divided into 3 Sub-Divisions and 10 (ten) Administrative Circles. The native people inhabiting Tawang district are known as Monpas. The Monpas have a glorious heritage of arts and crafts. Their craftsmanship is manifested in various trades like weaving, bamboo works and paintings, paper making, incense making, pottery, etc.

TAWANG Monastery:-

 

TAWANG Monastery:- About 2 Kms from the town is the Tawang Monastery. The Monastery is the second biggest and oldest in Asia and is known as the Tawang Ganden Namgyal Lhatse i.e., the celestial paradise of divine site chosen by the horse was founded by Merag Lodroe Gyamtso in the year 1680-81. The Dalai Lama gave him a painting of goddess Palden Lhamo to be kept in the monastery. The 8 m high glided statue of Lord Buddha dominates the sanctum. The great rotating prayer wheels, priceless thangkas, the drone of monks in prayer, sputtering butter lamps are an evocative vision. The Tawang Monastery has a residential building for the monks, a library, a museum and school for the basic education. Pierced atop a hill dominating everything around and below it is an enormous yellow-roofed Tawang monastery which was originally a large and fortified complex strategically sited where the caravan routes from Tibet, Bhutan and West Kameng met. The place is also famous with the legend of 7th Century A.D., King Kalawangpo and Khandro Drowa Zangmo, known as rTa nag mandal sgang.

How to Reach :
One can reach Tawang from other parts of the country via Guwahati and Tezpur in Assam. Upto Guwahati, there are daily flights of Air India, Jet Airways, Indigo, Spicejet Airlines from Delhi. There are also flights from Kolkata and other parts of the country. Beside this, there is train service including Rajdhani Express upto Guwahati. Alternately one can reach Tezpur by flight via Kolkata. From Guwahati/ Tezpur one has to proceed Tawang by road which takes about 13 hours from Guwahati and 10 hours from Tezpur. So, it is necessary to halt on the way in Bhalukpong/ Bomdila/ Dirang locatrd in West kameng District of Arunachal Pradesh. Next day one can reach Tawang via the beautiful Sela pass located at height of 14000 ft. Accommodation facilities like Government rest house, Tourist Lodge and hotels are available on the way in Bhalukpong, Bomdila and Dirang. WAR MEMORIAL:- The War Memorial is at a distance of 1 Km from the town. A beautiful Stupa is built in memory of the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives in 1962 Sino-Indian war.

SELA PASS:-

SELA PASS:- 80 Kms away from Tawang Hqs is the Sela lake. Two enchanting lakes exist near the Sela mountain pass which appear to be welcolming you to Tawang. The famous one is the Sela lake. Sighting a pair of swan in the Sela lake is said to be a good omen. Sela stands at the height of 13,714 fts above sea level. It is also the pass welcoming traveler on his way to Tawang. A beautiful gate with traditional art paves way for all those visiting. With its two lakes and tiny flowers of enchanting shades the Sela pass fills with ecstasy.
