Saheliyon-ki-Badi is a round-the-year favorite destination of tourists coming to Udaipur. This “Lok-Priya”-favorite of the public-garden was created at the orders of the Maharana Sangram Singh-II (r:1710-1734) around ~1717 for his daughters- सबॆकंवर Sabbai Kunwar, रूपकंवर Roop Kunwar & ब्रजकंवर Brij Kunwar and their cousins (sisters) of extended family & same-age girls (Saheliya सहेलिया) of nobles. 300 years ago it must have been a enthralling for the raaj-kumarees=princesses-to move out of Raaj Mahal and take a trip of ~4 km outside the city defense wall-Nagarkot- for an outing especially in the monsoon season- swinging, singing, dancing, self-cooking ! The present day Fateh Sagar was up-gradation of the Dewali-ka-Talab that was constructed by Maharana Jai Singh (Sangram’s grandfather r: 1680-1698 CE, he built the Jaisamand Lake during 1685-1691). The foundation stone of the dam of Fatehsagar was laid on April 04, 1889 (खात मोरत) while it was completed & commissioned on June 27, 1902 (डोरो फेरियो). Saheliyon-ki-Badi achieved its present layout at the turn of last century during the reign of Maharana Fateh Singh (r: 1884-1930) after he built the embankment of Fatehsagar, subsequent Maharana Bhopal Singh also made additions, Maharana Bhagwat Singh donated the built-up area with pools, fountains and part of the garden to Government of Rajasthan, which is now maintain through its Superintendant of Gardens, under the PWD Department. Rest of the Saheliyon-ki-Badi (~100 bighas may be) with fruit orchards agri-fields and a dairy is still a private property of the former Maharana. The intricately carved black “Chatrees” (canopies) are of local favorite stone grey schist/serpentinite & unique fountain system with water spouting out of the marble elephant trunks & bird beaks and chajja (छज्जा) -projections are what fascinate a visitor. We all hope that the Smart City administration/Tourist Reception Center will take note of the significance (pampering?) of daughters 300 years ago, it’s time that the names सबॆकंवर Sabbai Kunwar, Roop Kunwar & Brij Kunwar find place in the garden, e.g. the southern park outside of walled palace structure could be named Sabbai-Vatika, the western park with pond & elephant statues could be named Roop-Vatika, and the northern park could be developed as a “Brij-Vatika”. The inner pool area with museum building & fountains could be named “Sangram Chawk” (though built in early last century). Maharana Sangram Singh had constructed the palace, gardens, hunting lodges, & riding grounds at Nahar-Magra (~20 km east of Udaipur, north of Udaipur airport) for his sons-Jagat Singh and Nath Singh, the other sons Bagh Singh & Arjun Singh were yet to be born; for himself and his Maharanees, the Maharana built the gardens & palace-extensions, courtyards & pavilions in the Jagmandir Island of Pichola Lake; for his second son Nath Singh he got constructed the “Bhavya” magnificent 138 room mini palace-Bagore-ki-Haveli adjacent to Lake Pichola. Subsequently, Sangram Singh’s successor Maharana Jagat Singh-II got constructed Jagmandir (the world- famous Lake-Palace Hotel now) on an island in Pichola that was inaugurated on February 01, 1746.
