About the District :

Vadodara, also known as Baroda, is the third largest[6] city in the Indian State of Gujarat, after Ahmedabad and Surat. It is the administrative headquarters of Vadodara District. It is located on the banks of the Vishwamitri river, southeast of Ahmedabad, 139 km from state capital, Gandhinagar. Both the railway line and national highway connecting Delhi and Mumbai pass through Vadodara.

Vadodara has a population of almost 1.6 million people[7] (as of 2005). It is the site of the Lakshmi Vilas Palace belonging to the royal Gaekwad dynasty of the Marathas. It is also the home of the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, which is the largest university in Gujarat. The Lakshmi Vilas Palace

The Lakshmi Vilas Palace, an extravagant building of the Indo-Saracenic school, was built by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III in 1890 at a cost of GBP180,000. Major Charles Mant was the architect.

It is reputed to have been the largest private dwelling built till date and four times the size of Buckingham Palace. At the time of construction it boasted the most modern amenities such as elevators and the interior is reminiscent of a large European country house. It remains the residence of the Royal Family, who continue to be held in high esteem by the residents of Baroda.

Its ornate Darbar Hall, which is sometimes the venue of music concerts and other cultural events, has a Venetian mosaic floor, Belgium stained glass windows and walls with intricate mosaic decorations. Outside of the Darbar Hall is an Italinate courtyard of water fountains. The palace houses a remarkable collection of old armoury and sculptures in bronze, marble & terracotta by Fellici. The grounds were landscaped by William Goldring, a specialist from Kew Gardens. The palace is open to the public and an audio tour is available.

Makarpura Palace :

Makarpura Palace was a Gaekwad royal palace in the city of Vadodara, Gujarat state, India. It was built by Maharaja Khende Rao in 1870, designed in the Italian style. It was extended and renovated by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III. The palace is now used as a training school called No.17 Tetra School by the Indian Air Force.

The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda (MSU) :

The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda (MSU), is a university in the city of Vadodara, (Baroda) in Gujarat state, India. On January 8, 1879, Maharaja Sayajirao III laid foundation Stone for Baroda College.

Old Kothi :

Aimed at public facilities, Maharaja Sayajirao III, constructed an office builing in year 1876. It was designed by Major Charles Mant in Indo – Seranic Style
Faculty of Technology and Engineering – MSU (Kalabhavan) :
The Faculty of Technology & Engineering was established in 1949 by the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, as a development of the long standing institution popularly known as the Kalabhavan Technical Institute.
