India has made considerable progress over the years in the health sector under National Health Mission, that has improved the availability and access to quality health care, specially for the poor women and children residing in rural areas. The JSY scheme under NHM had barrier of ‘Out of Pocket Expenditure’ on drug, diagnostics, transport, etc. The Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK) was launched to provide free treatment, drug, diagnostics, diet and transport during institutional delivery. With the implementation of these schemes, significant progress is observed in institutional delivery and ANC coverage. As per the latest data of the Rapid Survey On Children (RSOC), the institutional deliveries in India are 78.7%, but only 61.8% women received ANC in first trimester and the coverage of full ANC was as low as 19.7%. The desired coverage and quality of maternal health services is still a matter of concern. In view of above findings, government has launched a scheme to provide minimum package of ANC services on the 9th day of every month to ensure that every pregnant woman receives atleast one check-up in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy.
